The ongoing 25th UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) in Madrid is an opportunity for world leaders to demonstrate that they are listening to the millions of people, said the head of an environmental organization.

“COP25 is an opportunity for world leaders to show that they have been listening to the millions of people on the streets, they have understood the irrefutable scientific evidence and they will now roll out a clear plan for the urgent reduction of emissions across the globe,” May Boeve, chief executive of 350 movement said in a statement on Tuesday.

Referring to Provisional Statement on the State of the Global Climate in 2019, released by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), she said: “We have witnessed the devastating impacts of floods, wildfires, intense typhoons and hurricanes across the globe. This is a terrifying reaffirment that time is running out to take action on climate breakdown.

WMO’s statement said that world’s temperature from January to October 2019 was recorded 1.1 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

Noting that there is an immediate need to end fossil fuels era, Boeve stressed that developed countries have a moral responsibility to help and support financially to vulnerable society that are most affected by the climate change.

Otherwise, she said, this will be “betrayal to future generations” who follows the summit.
