A compiled file that was sent to journalists, along with a daily press release, has revealed that the Jammu and Kashmir Police have been monitoring social media posts of prominent Pakistani politicians, journalists, activists and foreign media organizations.

Indian journalists received an e-mail that had an eight-page long word document attached, containing tweets posted about the situation in Kashmir and a list of Twitter accounts “monitored” by the police.

Some prominent Pakistani politicians, such as Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, journalists, activists and foreign news organizations were also on the list.

Police officers who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity confirmed that they have been monitoring many social media accounts for a while, and particularly after India revoked Kashmir’s special status on Aug.5.

“We are very much concerned about what is happening in the virtual world…we monitor social media, particularly Twitter, on a regular basis, and the tweets with posts critical of the state are collected,” police told News18.

The police requested journalists to ignore the attached file that was forwarded “inadvertently”.

News outlets from Turkey, Pakistan, Germany and China regarding Kashmir are also on the list, according to reports.
