A school resource officer in the U.S. state of Florida was arrested Tuesday for violently slamming a 15-year-old female student to the ground.

The incident occurred on Sept. 25 at Cross Creek School in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Speaking at a press briefing, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said Deputy Willard Miller, 38, was charged with felony child abuse.

“The way the deputy responds, for whatever occurred, whatever type of verbal dialogue was going on, it makes no sense and it wasn’t necessary,” Tony said, according to NBC News.

A video released by the sheriff’s department showed the moment when Miller can be seen in a room with the girl, who walks around with her hands in her pockets. Two other individuals are also present.

At one point, the teen walks behind Miller and appears to tap the back of his leg with her left foot.

Miller then puts his hands on her throat and violently slams her to the ground. He then turns the student onto her stomach, picks her up and pushes her into a side room.

“I hope every cop in America will disagree with that type of response,” said Tony, calling it “embarrassing.”

Miller has been released on a $5,000 bond and could face up to five years in prison if convicted.
