Uruguay’s leftist candidate Daniel Martínez and his center-right rival Luis Lacalle Pou will contest the presidency in a runoff on Nov. 24.
Martínez prevailed in the first round of the presidential elections with 39% of the vote, according to results at the ballot box.
Lacalle Pou, leader of the opposition National Party, obtained around 29%.
Ernesto Talvi, the candidate of the Colorado Party, was in third place with between 12% and 13% of the vote.
Former army commander Guido Manini Ríos had around 10%.
Following the results, Manini Ríos and Talvi expressed their support for Lacalle Pou in the second round.
