One week has passed since Turkey launched “Operation Peace Spring” in northern Syria, aiming to purge the region of PKK/YPG terrorists and establish a safe zone along the country’s border.

After President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from the war-torn country, the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and Syrian National Army (SNA) seized control of strategic positions in northern Syria in a very short period of time, leading to crucial questions about the U.S administration, which has been arming PKK/YPG terrorists for years.

Speaking exclusively to Yeni Şafak daily, terror and security expert Abdullah Ağar evaluated the recent developments in the region, responding to the question, “Where are the heavy weapons the US supplied to PKK/YPG terrorists?”.

” When you purge city centers and towns , it does not mean you have complete control over underground networks,” Ağar said.

He noted that about 200 kilometers of tunnels have been discovered in seven days and that they are connected to 60 different points.

“All the tunnels have not been uncovered yet,” he added.

Even though Turkey has repeatedly objected to U.S. arms being sent to the Syrian affiliate of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terror group, the YPG/PYD, in northern Syria, the U.S administration continued to supply thousands of truckloads of weapons and ammunition to the terror group under the pretense of battling Daesh.

Ağar also ascertained the possibility of the weapons being carried through the tunnels, saying: ” The tunnels are wide enough to allow heavy construction equipment to pass through. It is also possible that they have been transferred through these tunnels”.

Turkey on Oct. 9 launched Operation Peace Spring to eliminate terrorists from northern Syria in order to secure Turkey’s borders, aid in the safe return of Syrian refugees, and ensure Syria’s territorial integrity.

Ankara wants to clear east of the Euphrates River in northern Syria of the terrorist PKK and its Syrian offshoot, the PYD/YPG.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union — has been responsible for deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.
